Botox has been around for well over a century already but it wasn't known as this back them. These days, it is used primarily to fill up lines, creases, wrinkles and other gaps which may have appeared in a person's body, specifically the face.
The Bacterium
In the early 1800's Justinus Kerner thought about using botulinum toxin for therapy to address some physical abnormalities in people. The bacteria actually cause poisoning in meat products which were not handled properly. In the mid1900's, some physicians and doctors who experimented with this substance found out that it can block neuromascular transmissions and may therefore be used to treat some neuromascular disorders. The toxin has to be processed properly to be used well. In the 1960's; an ophthalmologist used it to treat strabismus and blepharospasm.
It wasn't until the early 1980's that Botox was commercially used to treat the eye conditions stated above. It turns out that the positive effects of the purified toxin last for approximately 16 to 20 weeks only. After this period of time, the patients will have to go back to have their shots and then wait for another four to six months for another batch of injections. The side effects of the injections were considered mild and fairly easy to remedy or treat which was why the injections were welcomed by individuals who were being treated for the eye disorders.
Cosmetic Use
Using Botox to paralyze the facial muscles thus rendering them unable to move is a common practice by dermatologists and other doctors to achieve aesthetic goals. The point is to prevent the formation of wrinkles and creases by blocking the movement of the muscles. Not all areas of the face can be injected with Botox in consideration of appearing natural. The effects actually lasts for about three to eight months and the patient can go back for another batch of injections if he or she wishes. There is no immunity to the effects so one can go back as often as one wants. Safety concerns are brushed aside by those who use this product since the toxin is processed and applied in very small doses.
Side Effects
Most, if not all, side effects of the use of Botox are temporary and can be easily remedied. One major side effect includes an uneven facial structure due to the wrong muscle group being affected. Other side effects are headaches, allergic reactions, flu-like symptoms and dysphagia. Pregnant women and those with an allergy to eggs are not advised to use this toxin in any way.
